Person-centered Care: Role of Advancements in Hearing Technology
With current estimates of the global prevalence of hearing loss exceeding 1.6 billion individuals, the burden of hearing loss, specifically in the aged, is considerable. Beyond impacts of communication, there is a growing body of evidence demonstrating the connection between hearing loss and various social and medical comorbidities, including cognitive performance, depression, loneliness, falls risk, and reduced quality of life. However, the link between the use of hearing aids and improvements in these adverse health outcomes is still emerging. We will review a summary of current research on the impact of hearing health on overall health and well-being. We will also review the role of hearing healthcare providers in mitigating their patients’ underlying risk factors and the most relevant aspects to consider when using hearing technology to assist them in leading healthy, safe, and independent lives. Lastly, we will share how various tools such as advanced data-logging and machine learning could be leveraged to demonstrate how hearing aid usage relates to health outcomes.

Ethical Issues in the Hearing Healthcare: Can They Be Avoided?
Making sound ethical choices and decisions is critical for the success of hearing healthcare professionals. However, ethical guidelines can vary based on experiences and perspectives. As a result, certification and licensing agencies have established their own codes of ethics to which professionals must adhere. It is the responsibility of each member to know and follow each code with which they are associated. Therefore, it is best practice for each clinic to create their own code of ethics using these organizations and the laws for their state as their standard. This course will explain the purpose of an ethics protocol and will review the differences between laws and ethics.
